It was designated as Buck Island Reef National Monument on December 28th, 1961 by John F. Kennedy.
The island covers 176 acres and is surrounded by a coral reef ecosystem supporting a large variety of marine life,including several endangered and threatened species such as hawksbill turtles and brown pelicans.
Snorkelers can follow an underwater marked trail on the eastern tip.
It is one of only three underwater trails in the United States.
Along the trail are plaques providing information about marine life commonly found in the area.
On the western edge of the island is Turtle Beach.
It’s white sand beach has been voted one of the world’s most beautiful beaches by National Geographic.
A number of Charter Tours are available at the boardwalk in Christiansted.
Most offer full or half day cruises that feature snorkeling, scuba,swimming and beach time.
